Unbeknownst to the bachelor, his pool of potential matches included both gay men and straight men who were pretending to be gay. The show revealed this secret toward the end: As icky as that might sound, in a perverse way, you have to give the show some credit.
At least it foregrounded a gay man trying to find love, instead of using gay men as humorous accessories—or potential roadblocks in the path of straight contestants. All of the gay men on the show had to pretend to be hetero.
Finding Prince Charming: the ‘first gay dating show’ on American television
Unlike Boy Meets Boy, there was no chance in this one that a gay contestant could find love unless it was with another contestant. And who could forget Gay, Straight, or Taken?
The format is basically all in the title: Like Playing It Straight, the most a gay man here could walk away with was a prize—not love. All of this is to say that in reality dating shows, gay men have never been allowed to just date. The only downside here?

Bass married actor Michael Turchin in and the ceremony itself became part of reality TV with a special program all about the wedding airing on E! While Logo is billing this as a first-of-its-kind show, it is really only the first gay dating show to feature an all-gay cast.

The show received considerable scorn from gay activists and critics who found the twist cruel and duplicitous. There will be none of that on Finding Prince Charming, which comes at a very different time for the gay community. Now that gay marriage is legal and Lance Bass can have his own gay wedding special on E!
